FoE: Annual cuts in emissions needed

Tuesday, 13, Mar 2007 12:00

Friends of the Earth (FoE) has called for the climate change bill to include targets to cut carbon emissions by at least three per cent a year.

The bill will be published today and is expected to commit the UK to a 60 per cent cut in emissions by 2050.

FoE director Tony Junioer said: "The climate change bill could make the UK a world leader in tackling climate change.

"However if we are to set a global example we need a bill which is strong enough to ensure successive governments deliver the cuts in carbon dioxide emissions that are needed."

He added: "There is now a huge coalition of organisations, politicians and political parties calling for a climate change law which will require the government to make annual cuts in the UK's carbon dioxide emissions.

"This includes 412 MPs (just under two thirds of the 646 MPs), all the main opposition parties and Stop Climate Chaos - a coalition of environment and development organisations, unions, faith, community and women's groups."
