Unionism vs. Austerity
Monday, 13 September 2010 00:00
The TUC has gathered in Manchester for its annual conference, with the agenda dominated by unions' responses to the impending comprehensive spending review by the government.
Delegates are arguing on how best to oppose the coalition's planned cuts in public spending, with RMT general secretary Bob Crow seeking a campaign of civil disobedience, while others are suggesting a more moderate strategy of providing a realistic alternative to the austerity drive.
The conference will feed into the Labour leadership election, with the final hustings for the contest being held there, and may influence the eventual winner's stance on opposing the government.
The spending review will be revealed on October 20th, with union leaders planning mass protests on the day of its publication.
