Union anger over pensions announcement
17/06/11
Unions are accusing the government of sabotaging negotiations over public sector pensions.
Chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander announced that the public sector retirement age and state pension age will be standardised at 66. He also said that contributions would need to increase so that people's pensions in future at retirement can be maintained at current levels.
Mr Alexander's comments have been met with fury by union leaders, who are warning that negotiations could grind to a halt.
Tensions had already been ratcheted up earlier on this week following the news that unions representing 750,000 public sector workers plan to strike on June 30th.
