Unemployment increases

The unemployment rate rose to 7.9 per cent in the three months leading to the end of December, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) reported today.
ONS figures show the number of people out of work increased by 44,000 to reach a total of 2.49 million nationwide.
Youth unemployment rose as the number of jobless 16 to 24 year olds increased by 66,000 on the quarter to reach 965,000, the highest figure since records began in 1992.
Claims for Jobseeker's Allowance increased to 1.46 million as did the number of economically inactive people aged between 16 and 64, reaching 9.36 million.
The job figures come the day after inflation hit the four per cent mark in the United Kingdom.
