Student immigration

Monday, 6 September 2010 00:00

The immigration minister, Damian Green has positioned himself to limit the number of student visas being issued to non-EU migrants to the UK, outlining the government's stance in a speech on Monday.

Net migration to the UK has increased according to Home Office statistics, with the number of students entering the country having risen sharply.

The increase is partly attributed to so-called 'bogus colleges', educational institutions being used as a cover for what is actually economic migration.

The Conservatives made cutting immigration a central plank of their campaign, and the policy of a cap on non-EU migrants remains in the coalition agreement despite opposition from the Liberal Democrats.
