Strikes going ahead

Strikes over public sector pensions are set to go ahead tomorrow despite yesterday's last ditch effort from David Cameron to dissuade workers.

Speaking at the Local Government Association conference in Birmingham the prime minister attempted to persuade the 750,000 staff expected to stage a one-day walkout that the government's position was right and they should not strike while talks are still ongoing.

Public sector workers are angry that their pensions contributions are due to go up and their retirement ages put back as a result of the government's proposed changes.

The strikes are expected to cause bedlam across the country with many schools forced to close and a walkout by UK Border Agency staff anticipated to result in huge queues at immigration in the nation's airports.
