Sir Paul Stephenson resignation

18/07/11

Sir Paul Stephenson resigned as Metropolitan police commissioner last night following increasing pressure over his links to the phone-hacking scandal.

He had faced controversy throughout recent days regarding his relationship with former News of the World (NOTW) executive editor Neil Wallis.

Mr Wallis took on a communications consultancy role at the Met after he left the NOTW.

It was also revealed yesterday morning that Sir Paul had stayed for free at a health resort, at which Mr Wallis worked in a PR role, saving up to £12,000.

Sir Paul's resignation after two-and-a-half years has ratcheted up pressure once again on David Cameron over his own connections to the phone hacking scandal via former NOTW and Downing St employee Andy Coulson.
