Shadow Cabinet elections
Thursday, 30 September 2010 00:00
The battles lines for election to the shadow Cabinet have been drawn, with 19 spots up for grabs and 49 contenders seeking a front bench role.
Speculation is rife over who will get the critical positions after David Miliband bowed out from frontline politics.
Ed Balls is known to be keen on becoming George Osborne's shadow and Sadiq Khan is being tipped for a big role following his running of Ed Miliband's campaign for the leadership.
Even perpetual backbencher Diane Abbott is likely to end up with a role.
The new leader has already stamped his authority over the shadow chief whip role, which is separately elected, and will look to do so with the rest once elections are complete.
MPs vote for their peers to be elevated to the front bench, but only the leader decides who gets specific posts.
