Riot sentences
17/08/11
Some of the sentences handed out to last week's rioters are too harsh, MPs and justice campaigners have claimed.
Yesterday two young men in their 20s, both of previously good character, were handed four-year sentences for inciting people to riot on Facebook.
Magistrates courts have been working flat out to process cases after over 2,800 people were arrested during last week's widespread disorder.
Liberal Democrats have expressed their concern at the increasingly authoritarian approach being taken by Conservative ministers and the way this has filtered down to the courts.
However many Conservatives have defended their position and the need to administer quick but strong justice to deter riots in future.

Justice: Question over advice to magistrates on riot sentences
Eric Pickles: Strong sentences for rioters necessary
