Obesity plan

The government has been accused of abandoning its commitment to public health as Andrew Lansley outlined a "non-regulatory approach" to junk food.

The health secretary told a public health conference yesterday that the private sector could effectively buy its way out of being regulated by backing public health schemes.

The announcement coincides with the halting of funding for the £75 million Change4Life campaign.

Critics have slammed the moves for enabling the private sector to continue irresponsible practices in return for propping up the ailing public initiative.
