Health bill tensions

06/09/11

Fresh tensions within the coalition are likely to erupt later today when the health and social care bill once again comes before parliament.

The grassroots of the Liberal Democrat party have bristled over the government's NHS reforms and a number of MPs openly oppose it.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has encouraged his MPs to put "probing questions" to ministers during debate, but said he does not believe the bill threatens the "founding principles" of the NHS.

The bill is due to move to the Lords later this month, where it may be subject to amendments from Liberal Democrat peers.
