Freedom bill published
Friday, 11 February 2011 00:00
The government published its protection of freedom bill today, designed to rein back surveillance practices sanctioned under the previous Labour government.
The bill will give local communities and individuals the power to question the use of CCTV by applying for a judicial review if they believe the cameras are being used unjustly or infringing upon their privacy.
The use of CCTV will be placed under a statutory code of conduct, marking the first time a government has attempted to regulate the widespread use of the cameras.
DNA database records will be expunged if a suspect is acquitted and background checks to work with children and the vulnerable adults will become less extensive.
The legislation also includes provisions to curb wheel-clamping on private land.
The bill is the brainchild of deputy prime minister Nick Clegg and Liberal Democrats will hope it leaves the party with a positive record of civil liberties.
