Energy price rises
11/07/11
British Gas announced on Friday that gas and electricity prices are to rise by an average of 18% from mid August.
The energy provider blamed the rising wholesale price of gas for the increases.
A month ago Scottish Power revealed similar price rises for August and other major suppliers are expected to follow suit.
This has led to reports that the UK is to face some of the highest energy prices in Europe, a suggestion the energy secretary Chris Huhne dismissed as "nonsense" on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show yesterday.
Mr Huhne was responding to a Sunday Telegraph report which predicted a 30% rise in energy bills over the next 20 years as a result of government incentives to persuade energy providers to build and utilise more UK based wind farms and nuclear power plants.
