Child benefit cuts
Monday, 4 October 2010 00:00
Parents earning over £44,000 will see their child benefit payments scrapped, George Osborne confirmed today.
The cut will see an end to the universality of the payments and will affect 15% of families.
The move had been widely expected as part of the government's austerity drive and is supported by both coalition parties.
Mr Osborne has attempted to paint the measure as part of the government's commitment to spare the least well-off from the brunt of the cuts.
Unions have reacted angrily however, claiming it represents an ideological attack on the welfare state.
