Changing of the tsars: Government and enterprise
Monday, 1 November 2010 00:00
The government today appointed David Young as enterprise tsar, to begin a review into how policy can remove barriers for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
Lord Young takes on the role in addition to his post as advisor to the prime minister on health and safety - and replaces former tsar Alan Sugar, who was fired when the new government took office.
The prime minister has made much of his commitment to small businesses, highlighting the issue during his speech at the CBI last week.
Lord Young has pledged to reverse successive governments' 'failure' to nurture growing businesses.
SMEs currently provide 60% of Britain's private jobs and are crucial to the coalition's hopes for a strong private sector-led recovery.
