Buildup before eurocrisis talks
08/12/2011
Senior Conservative figures are continuing to offer contrary views on Britain's relationship with the European Union.
The prime minister is heading to Brussels tonight for dinner with European leaders before tomorrow's summit, which is expected to see agreement on some sort of greater fiscal integration among the EU's 17 eurozone countries.
David Cameron is under extraordinary pressure from his party to demand the repatriation of powers if there is a significant rebalancing of power within the EU.
A deal done among the 27 EU member states could give him some room from negotiation, but a more likely agreement between 17 could restrict his options.
The eurozone crisis is threatening to open up divides within the Conservative party not seen since the 1990s, when the party was torn apart by its disagreements over Europe.
