British High Street
13/12/11
Mary Portas has published her official report into saving the British High Street, highlighting local planning laws and parking fees as areas of concern.
The report is the centrepiece of government response to concerns that trade slumps and out-of-town developments are killing the High Street.
The TV presenter's 28-point plan, commissioned by David Cameron, suggests 'town teams' made up of local residents should be responsible for managing the High Street, including accessibility and trade.
The move would significantly diminish local council's power over the town centre but it would chime with the coalition's 'big society' agenda.
Cameron: High Street should heart of community
Portas: High Street isn't just commercial
