Bringing the work programme down to size
24/01/2012
Independent auditors have questioned the government's assessment of the impact of its work programme.
The Department for Work and Pensions estimated that 40% of over-25s would get jobs under the programme.
But the National Audit Office has said in a report out today that just 26% will actually benefit.
The revelation has prompted criticism of the coalition's welfare-to-work efforts, which Labour says are fundamentally failing to do the job they are supposed to.
It comes as deputy prime minister Nick Clegg visited McDonald's training centre in Finchley. The fast food chain is creating 2,500 jobs across the UK.
