The Government is committed to a more central role for patients and the Prime Minister has announced that a new system of Patient-Led Inspections will replace Patient Environment Action Teams from 2013. RCP gives evidence on dignity in care for older people

Dr Linda Patterson, RCP clinical vice president, will give oral evidence to the Commission on improving dignity in care for older people tomorrow between 11.45 am and 12.45 pm at Age UK Headquarters, Tavis House, 1-6 Tavistock Square, London, WC1H 9NA.The Commission is being held by the NHS Confederation, Local Government Group and Age UK. Other witnesses in the same evidence session include Janet Davies, RCN Director of Nursing and Service Delivery and Dr Helena McKeown, BMA Head of Career Doctors and Independent Medical Services.

New goals focusing on the views of patients are to become a key part of the NHS' future.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley said the 'outcomes framework' would provide 60 new goals for the NHS.

Rather than just looking at clinical data they will also take into account the view of patients.

Bereaved relatives and patients, including children, will be asked their opinion to try to establish whether the NHS has improved.

It is hoped that achieving the new standards would result in 24,000 early deaths a year from cancer and other long-term conditions being prevented.
