Autumn statement buildup
24/11/2011
Next week is set to be one of the coalition's toughest yet, as the struggling economy makes spending cuts even worse.
Tuesday's autumn statement by chancellor George Osborne is likely to be accompanied by downgraded growth forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility.
Then Wednesday will see a massive walkout by public sector workers protesting against cuts to their pensions arrangements.
The strike is set to be the biggest since the 1970s and poses a key test of the government's resolve.
It will be strengthened by broad public opposition to the strikes, after ministers made an offer to unions proposing the protection of all accrued rights earlier this month.
