SNP: Lib Dems are split

Monday, 23 August 2010 12:00 AM

Dave Thompson, Highlands and Islands MSP, comments on Lib Dem defections:

"Charlie Kennedy is right that people in Ross, Skye and Lochaber did not vote for a Lib Dem coalition with the Conservatives, but they certainly did not vote for the Labour party either.

"It is no surprise Charlie Kennedy as a politician of some principle cannot stomach the actions of his party in government. Many Lib Dems in the Highlands and across Scotland feel the same way, but to sign up with the party that backed the Iraq war and commissioned a new generation of
nuclear weapons would be to betray the electorate not once but twice.

"When it comes to Labour or the Tories on key issues of Trident, Iraq, Afghanistan or nuclear energy there is no difference between them.

"Whether Kennedy stays or goes the truth is the Lib Dems are split from top to bottom over their Conservative coalition and instead of fighting for Scotland in Westminster they are fighting each other and rapidly tiring the public's patience."
