Hug: Evolution not revolution

Adam Hug, policy director of the think tank Foreign Policy Centre, comments on foreign policy:

“We are seeing a foreign policy evolution, not a revolution.

“The government are evolving traditional Conservative foreign policy in response to current trends in global economics and power developing throughout the climate change talks and the G20.

“In terms of the EU, it is encouraging to see the Conservatives taking a more pragmatic approach; hopefully this will continue to take over from the old style of bashing bureaucrats.

“It will also be good to see greater numbers of UK nationals working for the commission.

“However, it needs to be recognised that they will be commission employees first and foremost, rather than representatives of the UK, regardless of their nationality. It is not as if they are solely going to become instruments of UK foreign policy.”
